Our Industry
The European Thoroughbred breeding industry is a world leader, and the foundation of a European Racing industry worth over 34 billion euros a year in betting revenue.
Throughout the EU in 2008 there were:
- Over 23,112 thoroughbred breeders
- Over 2092 stallions used for breeding, with around 34,000 mares
- 30 573 foals
- at least 100,000 hectares of grassland used for thoroughbreds alone
- Stallion nominations alone in the EU are worth over 200 million euros a year* 2008 figure
- turnover of horses sold privately and at sales totalling over 761 million euros with 18 080 horses sold in 2008 at public auction
- around 126,000 people employed in this sector
