German breeders exploit 3,200 hectares of permanent grassland for thoroughbreds all around the country. Those are mainly located in the Rhine-Area (around Cologne), between Hamburg and Hannover, around Frankfurtand, eastern countries and Bavaria.

Employment

The global figure for employment in the Racing and Breeding industry is around 3,000 full-time jobs, including indirect jobs.

Sales

Auction sales take place in Baden-Baden three times a year. In 2014, 400 horses have passed successfully through the ring in 2014, including 178 highly selected yearlings. 

Racing

180 race days are devoted to thoroughbreds and take place in 37 racetracks in Germany.

Betting

The betting activity in Germany generates €200 million. 84% of this revenue comes from bookmakers that have largely challenged the German Tote in recent years.

Trends

The number of foals has stabilized since 2013 with a slightly increase following new stallions, higher breeders’ premiums and a better market.
