The Spanish Stud Book for Thoroughbreds exists since 1883. Since its beginning, the quality of horses bred in Spain has consistently improved. In 2014, there were 90 yearlings registered in the catalogue for the sales in La Zarzuela.

There are five racecourses in Spain hosting flat races. One is located in Madrid, three others in the South of the country, in Andalusia, and the last one in San Sebastian, in the Basque country.
