Territories

In France, around 19,000 hectares of permanent grassland are used for Thoroughbred breeding. Breeding is expanded across the whole French territory.

Employment

The Thoroughbred Breeding industry in France generates 9,700 direct job, amongst which 2,659 farm owners and 7,043 employees.

In what concerns indirect jobs, it is difficult to extract data for Horse Racing from other Horse activities, and we estimate a number of 29,290 indirect jobs in the whole Horse industry in France.

Sales

There are two auction sales houses in France: Arqana, located in Deauville in Normandy and which organises ten sales a year, and Osarus located in La Teste in the south-west of France which hosts three sales. In total, 3,000 horses are sold at public auction in France, amongst which 1,076 yearlings.

Racing

155 racetracks in France host gallop races. 224 race days are planned every year in both jumping and flat.

Betting

Betting on French flat and jumping races generated €4,617,750 billion in 2014.

10% of this revenue is reversed to the Horse industry and the functioning of Racing authorities. Thanks to this contribution, France Galop has reversed more than €271 million as breeding incentives in 2014.

Economic Impact

We estimate that the annual economic impact of the Racing and Breeding Industry is €2.3 billion.
