EHN - MEP Horse Meeting - March 2026 EFTBA Out In Force at MEP Horse Meeting

EFTBA Well Represented at the MEP Horse Group Meeting in Brussels on 5th March 2026

A meeting of the MEP (Members of European Parliament) Horse Group took place on 5th March 2026 in the EU Parliament Buildings in Brussels arranged by the European Horse Network (EHN)

The EFTBA was represented by its Chairman Joe Hernon and Veterinary Advisory Committee Chairman Des Leadon.

In attendance were members of the EHN (European Horse Network) along with   a number of MEPs who have a keen interest in and passion for the European Bloodstock Industry.

Nina Carberry hosted European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Much of the discussion was on the future of the equine sector as well as negotiations on the next Common Agricultural Policy progress (CAP).

During her address at this meeting, EU President Ursula von der Leydon spoke of the importance of the human animal bond that horses provide, as well as her understanding of horsemanship, which implies knowledge of the animal - history and respect for the horse.

She outlined her personal equine experiences which range from pony ownership through to competing on high value Hannoverians in California and on her return to Europe, in major shows such as Aachen.

She broadened these experiences to highlight her understanding and appreciation of the value of equine competitive events to society as a whole and outlined the value of the green environment provided by stud farms.

Her contribution was followed by one from Co- Chair of the MEP Horse Group, Nina Carberry, who followed a similar vein and touched on the EU Welfare in transport Proposals – stating that “one size could not fit all”, in this context.

These presentations were followed by questions from the audience of other MEP’s and EHN member organisations. Des Leadon used this opportunity to expand on the value to the rural environment and society as a whole, that is provided by stud farms.

He also used the opportunity to speak directly to President von der Leyen and to all present, to highlight the data provided by EFTBA (to the EU Commission, Council and MEPs) which shows conclusively, that there is no justification for prohibiting the transport of pregnant mares after 80% of gestation and no justification for prohibiting the transport of foals for foal heat matings.

Discussions included the importance of maintaining the sector’s social licence during which MEP Nina Carberry's touched on proposals for moving towards an EU-wide digital identification and traceability system for horses.

President von der Leyen will come to Ireland during the Irish EU Presidency and her visit provides an opportunity to introduce her to the Thoroughbred racing and breeding industry. She expressed interest in riding while she is in Ireland.

Her visit to Ireland will be a very valuable opportunity to heighten the profile of the Thoroughbred industry.
